What does a Nutritional Therapist do?

Updated: Aug 6

What Does a Nutritional Therapist Actually Do?

Most of us know, at least on some level, that we should be eating better, moving more, and carving out more time for ourselves if we want to live a healthy, happy life.

But then life happens. Between work, family, and the general busyness of modern living, finding time (and headspace) for your own health often gets pushed to the bottom of the list. Convenience often wins and there’s no shame in that. But here’s the thing: when we consistently eat, move, and live in ways that don’t truly support our wellbeing, it catches up with us.

It might show up as ongoing low energy, disrupted sleep, weight that slowly creeps on (and won’t budge), mood swings, or persistent symptoms like IBS, joint pain, anxiety or hormonal imbalances. These might not be the kind of things that send you to the hospital, but they do quietly chip away at your quality of life.

The good news? What you eat really can make a profound difference. I’ve seen it time and again, when women make small, consistent changes to their nutrition and lifestyle, those niggling symptoms often improve dramatically. You don’t have to just put up with them.

So, What Is Nutritional Therapy?

Nutritional therapy is all about using food, lifestyle, and sometimes supplements in a targeted way to support your health goals. And, while it was once seen as a bit “alternative,” that’s changed. We now have a growing body of science (and a few forward-thinking doctors like Dr Rangan Chatterjee and Dr Michael Mosley) showing just how powerful this approach can be.

As a nutritional therapist, I apply up-to-date nutrition and health science to you, personally, your symptoms, your history, and your lifestyle. Together, we’ll build a practical, realistic plan that supports your health, your hormones, your energy, and your life. I also provide coaching support to help you make the changes, because knowing what to do is only half the battle; implementing it is where the real change happens.

A Personalised Approach

One-size-fits-all advice just doesn’t work, especially not in midlife when your body is changing, and your needs are unique. That’s why nutritional therapy is tailored to you.

We look at everything from your medical history and symptoms to your food preferences, daily routine and even past experiences that might be influencing your health now. You might be struggling with low mood, while someone else has stubborn weight gain or hormonal swings. Your body, your history, your lifestyle - everything is taken into account.

This kind of personalisation takes time, expertise, and care. You could download a diet plan off the internet, but it won’t reflect what you need. And with supplements used properly, they can support your health, but taken randomly or based on a social media tip? That can be ineffective or even unsafe.

Why Don’t More People See a Nutritional Therapist?

Honestly, a big reason is that many people just don’t realise what a huge difference the right food and lifestyle changes can make. Media headlines often give confusing or contradictory advice, and the reality is most doctors receive very little nutrition training during their medical education.

Conventional medicine often focuses on managing symptoms, usually with medication. But in nutritional therapy, we aim to understand what’s driving those symptoms in the first place and then support your body to rebalance from the inside out.

This is part of a bigger approach called Functional Medicine, which asks: Why is this symptom happening? rather than just how to suppress it. If your blood sugar is high, why? If your hormones are all over the place, what’s causing it? We get curious, we dig deeper, and we tailor your plan accordingly.

What Happens in a Nutrition Consultation?

Your first session with me will last up to 90 minutes. Before we meet, I’ll ask you to complete a health questionnaire so I can start to get a full picture of your story. During our time together, we’ll talk about your health goals, your symptoms, your eating habits, your lifestyle, and what’s working and what’s not.

We talk food likes and dislikes, routines, stress levels, energy, sleep, hormones… whatever’s relevant for you. Everything you share is confidential and completely without judgment.

My programmes usually run over either 6 or 12 weeks, so that you have ongoing support and accountability while you make changes. It’s rarely helpful to have just one session because sustainable change takes time, encouragement, and adjustments along the way.

“I Already Know What to Do”

You might be thinking, I already know what I should be doing, I just can’t seem to stick to it. You’re not alone. Motivation naturally ebbs and flows, especially when life gets in the way.

That’s why working with someone like me makes such a difference. I help you stay focused and on track, not with pressure, but with encouragement, tools and accountability. Having a coach in your corner can be the difference between starting yet another plan… and actually following it through.
